Wilkes County has a complicated history and an uncomplicated music scene.
MerleFest started here in 1988 as a tribute to Eddy Merle Watson and his father Doc. It has grown into one of the most respected roots music festivals in the country. Four days, every April. Music that spans bluegrass, old-time, Americana, blues, folk, and Celtic without trying to be all things to everyone.
The Scotch-Irish roots of this county run through its crafts as much as its sound. The Brushy Mountain Apple Festival brings handmade quilts, pottery, furniture, and jewelry together each summer. The Revolutionary War history here is genuine, not reenacted.
Wilkes County does not oversell itself. Come prepared to discover things the brochure doesn't mention.
